BCL Grow: A Clean Heart — Psalm 51:5, 10
Psalm 51:5, 10 (Sanctification)
Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me….Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. — Psalm 51:5, 10.
“Consider the confession of the psalmist David (Psa. 51:5), ‘Behold, I was shaken in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.’ Here he ascends from his actual sin [his adultery with Bathsheba and murder of her husband, Uriah the Hittite] to the fountain of it, namely, corrupt nature.” — Thomas Boston, Human Nature in Its Fourfold State, p. 66.
Steps to Take
1. Ponder: Do you ever consider your motives behind your actions? If even an unborn baby is a sinner, how then should we think of sin?
2. Remember: The affection of the heart is a crucial aspect of true obedience. Do your good works come from a heart seeking to love God and others, or do they stem from sinful motives, such as pride or wanting fame or to feel good about yourself?
3. Rejoice: In this life there will be many imperfections in our actions. We as Christians will do good things with sinful motives. Yet we can rejoice that as we ask the Father for forgiveness, trust in his love and faithfulness, and seek to grow in love and affection for him, our motives will also be transformed. We will do acts of love for others out of love for our Heavenly Father.
