BCL Grow: Fellowship — Proverbs 17:17
Proverbs 17:17 (Church)
A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. — Proverbs 17:17
“A Christian fellowship lives and exists by the intercession of its members for one another, or it collapses. I can no longer condemn or hate a brother for whom I pray, no matter how much trouble he causes me. His face, that hitherto may have been strange and intolerable to me, is transformed in intercession into the countenance of a brother for whom Christ died, the face of a forgiven sinner.” — Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Christian Community, p. 86.
Steps to Take
1. Ponder: As a friend to others, what are we to do when our friend is facing trouble or is difficult to love?
2. Remember: We are all fallen sinners, prone to wander and struggle in this life. At the times when our friends are facing adversity is when they need our friendship most. This is what it means to be a loyal friend, bound to one another in Christ Jesus.
3. Rejoice: We are forgiven by God’s grace through faith in Christ. Be joyful for friends who love at all times even in adversity, even when things are most difficult. Be thankful that God loved us when we were enemies, and be glad that we can show that love to others as true friends.
