Bible Passage

Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth. — Psalm 124:8

"‘The beauty and appeal of this confession of faith has so resonated with the church that the words of Psalm 124:8 became a standard declaration of faith at the beginning of Christian worship services.… Surely it is good at the beginning of worship to declare our faith in the God who is the Creator of all and is our help.” — W. Robert Godfrey, Learning to Love the Psalms, p. 216.

Steps to Take

1. Reflect: Consider the difficulties and struggles of this life—where is help? Who can help?

2. Remember: In the Psalms of Ascent (120-134) we sing of God as our help—the object of our faith, hope, and love. He will keep us, guard us, restore us, and bless us. He created everything, so nothing can withstand him. God who created you is he who helps you. He never sleeps or slumbers—he keeps your life.

3. Respond: Confess with all those who have gone before us that the Lord is your help. For those who are his, God has promised to never forsake them. And those who are in Christ Jesus by grace alone, through faith alone, are his forever. Trust him, trust his promises, and be assured that he who created you is your help.
