BCL Grow: Glory to God — Psalm 96:1-3
Psalm 96:1-3 (God)
Sing to the LORD a new song, sing to the LORD, all the earth.
Sing to the LORD, bless His name, proclaim His victory day after day.
Tell of His glory among the nations, His wondrous deeds, among all peoples. — Psalm 96:1-3
“Reflecting on the vice of vainglory is a sobering exercise, and adding our culture of narcissism to the mix is more sobering still. As sinful creatures, we’re prone to seek our own glory rather than God’s, to be enamored with ourselves rather than him, and our present cultural ethos provides this evil inclination with plenty of encouragement. Yet we are called to glorify God and, as we have considered, we cannot glorify God without a robust reverence and awe for him.” — God’s Glory Alone: the Majestic Heart of Christian Faith and Life, David VanDrunen, p. 145.
3 Steps to Take
1. Ponder: In a culture of narcissism and social media that promotes vainglory, how does glorifying God help redirect our focus from ourself to God?
2. Remember: Focusing on God’s grace, his saving mercy, and especially his forgiveness, leads us to increase in humility.
3. Rejoice: We have a gracious, compassionate, forgiving savior whose steadfast love we enjoy by faith in Christ. Rejoice and glorify God in reverence and awe for his wondrous deeds of love and mercy.
