BCL Grow: Worship — John 4:21-24
John 4:21-24 (Church)
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” — John 4:21-24
“Like all old covenant shadows, these glorious prospects have been realized in the days of the new covenant, when people worship neither in Jerusalem nor in Samaria, but wherever in the world the Spirit of God manifests himself (John 4:21-24)….This ‘Jerusalem above’ is not merely a ‘spiritual’ phenomenon that has no connection with the ‘real’ world in which we live. Its reality injects itself constantly into the lives of God’s people. Every time Christians assemble for worship, they join with the host of the ‘heavenly Jerusalem’ (Heb. 12:22).” — O. Palmer Robertson, The Israel of God: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, p. 17.
Steps to Take
1. Ask: Why is worship the most important activity of the people of God? What are some ways we worship our Lord in spirit and in truth in this world?
2. Remember: True worship is God-centered, not man-centered. God alone is the object of our worship. Graciously, God meets us by his Spirit wherever we gather together by faith in Christ Jesus to worship him.
3. Rejoice: It is a wonderful privilege to draw near to God in worship. Rejoice that even in this fallen and sinful world, we can join with the heavenly Jerusalem to worship God, sing his praises, and hear his word.
