BCL Grow: Confession — Psalm 139:23-24
Psalm 139:23-24 (Sanctification)
Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting! — Psalm 139:23-24
“Confession involves honesty. We freely admit what we’ve done. We don’t excuse it or blame others for it. We don’t call it less than it is. We describe it and name it for the true evil that it is. Such confession also involves humility. We have to humble ourselves before the Lord. We have to recognize that God is God and we are not. Our sin is against a holy and righteous God and is deserving of death. And then we relish the grace that is lavished upon us in Christ.” — Christina Fox, Idols of a Mother’s Heart, p. 168.
3 Steps to Take
1. Ponder: God knows your every thought, word, and action. Consider what it means to be able to confess to him the idols of your heart and sins and to receive his forgiveness because of Christ Jesus.
2. Remember: God is a holy and just God. He is also compassionate, merciful, and forgiving. He showed his righteousness by being “just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus” (Rom. 3:26).
3. Rejoice: Rejoice that God is continuing to sanctify you by his word and Spirit. When you confess your sins, he is faithful and just to forgive them and to lead you to grow in righteouness.
