BCL Grow: God Instructs — Proverbs 4:13
Proverbs 4:13 (Providence)
Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life. — Proverbs 4:13
“Even though wisdom is something to be pursued by individual effort, it is essentially a gift from God (2:6)—one of the many paradoxes in this book. The contrast between the good and the bad (vv. 2:20-22) is reminiscent of Ps 1.” — Roland E. Murphy, The Tree of Life: An Exploration of Biblical Wisdom Literature,p. 17.
Steps to Take
1. Reflect: How does God instruct his people with wisdom? Consider what effort we should make to pursue God’s wisdom.
2. Remember: Prayer is one means of receiving wisdom from God—asking him for his wisdom, especially when faced with suffering, trials and difficult situations (James 1:5-8). Another is to read, study and meditate on God’s wisdom given to us in the Bible.
3. Respond: Spend time being instructed by God’s wisdom. Study his word and learn how this fallen world works. Ask God to instruct you in his wisdom and he will graciously increase your knowledge and skill to live faithfully in this fallen and oftentimes painful world.
