BCL Grow: Controlled by God's Love — 2 Corinthians 5:14
2 Corinthians 5:14 (Sanctification)
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. — 2 Corinthians 5:14
“As God the Father has always looked outward to the Son and vice versa, so Eve was created to look outward, to look like God and to enjoy God as the source of all goodness and life. But Eve was turning inward to love only herself. And thus she was turning from the image of God into the image of the devil.” — Michael Reeves, Delighting in the Trinity, p. 68.
Steps to Take
Ponder: How often have you heard that the first sin was eating the forbidden fruit? Does this understanding of love help clarify why the eating of the fruit was such a terrible thing? Eve’s love turned from finding it’s fulfillment in God to herself. Her love for something other than God was the root sin.
Ask Yourself: If sin is a looking inward or away from God to something else, how often do you think this type of action happens in our day-to-day living? How often do we look to other people, places, and events for comfort, joy, peace, or confidence? Looking to other things for satisfaction instead of to God is a form of idolatry.
Rejoice: Christ came to turn our love from ourselves, sin, and the Devil to himself. In Christ you are a new creation undergoing transformation into the image of God. No longer do you belong to the Devil and this sinful world, but you belong to Christ and to the glorious world to come. Christ’s love for you and your love for him is your motivating and controlling influence.
