BCL Grow: Gospel Purpose — Ephesians 1:5-6
Ephesians 1:5-6 (Gospel)
He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. — Ephesians 1:5-6
“God’s first purpose in and by the gospel is to glorify himself, his wisdom, goodness, love, grace, righteousness and holiness by Jesus Christ, and that for ever (Eph. 1:5-6). But the gospel simultaneously reveals the love and grace of God to lost sinners which is brought to us by the mediation of Jesus Christ. And it is only by Jesus Christ as God incarnate that God will be glorified and sinners saved (Acts 26:18).” — John Owen, The Holy Spirit, p. 101.
Steps to Take
1. Consider: Why is it always right and good for God to glorify himself? Considering all of God’s attributes, why is it also fitting that God would redeem creation from the fall (Rom. 8:18-23)?
2. Remember: While many teach that there are various paths to God, this is not what the Bible teaches. Redemption from our guilt and sin and the gift of eternal life come only through Jesus Christ.
3. Act: Be honest with those who wrongly believe that God will accept them if they try hard enough, always speaking the truth in love. God cannot look the other way when it comes to sin and evil; he must rule in righteousness. It is only by the righteousness of Christ and his perfect sacrifice counted (imputed; credited) to us that we can have peace with God. Praise God for our salvation in Christ!
