BCL Grow: First and Last Adam—1 Corinthians 15:49
1 Corinthians 15:49 (Redemption)
Just as we have born the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. — 1 Corinthians 15:49
“Adam and Eve were naked when they served God in the garden-temple (Gen. 2:25). The new adamic humanity, however, will never appear naked before God. Instead, they are clothed in the righteousness of Christ as a permanent reminder and source of praise for the work of the second Adam (Rev. 3:18; 19:8). ” — J. V. Fesko, Last Things First, Unlocking Genesis 1-3 with the Christ of Eschatology p. 181.
Steps to Take
1. Reflect: Because of Adam’s sin, humankind can no longer stand before God faultless, without guilt and shame. Adam and Eve tried to cover their shame on their own. What are some ways we try to cover our guilt and shame before other people and God?
2. Remember: Just as Adam and Eve’s fig leaf clothing had to be replaced with clothing provided by God, so only when we are clothed in Christ’s righteousness are we free from guilt and shame before God.
3. Rejoice: The entirety of Christ’s birth, life, death, and resurrection is the work he accomplished to save sinners. If you trust in Christ Jesus alone to save you from your sin, recognizing that you cannot save yourself from the just wrath of God against your sin, you have eternal life and Christ’s righteousness. God sees and loves you as his own child and will bring you to dwell with him forever.
