BCL Grow: Assurance — 2 Corinthians 1:20
2 Corinthians 1:20 (Redemption)
For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory. — 2 Corinthians 1:20
“Jesus Christ is God’s everlasting ‘yea’ and ‘amen’. While they were together in eternity, and then when Christ took our frail flesh and lived among us, and now in heaven at God’s right hand, Christ has always been God’s great ‘yes!’ God has had no second plan, no second thoughts.… Christ is the affirmation of God’s love for sinners.” — Joel R. Beeke, Knowing and Growing in Assurance of Faith, pp. 77-78.
Steps to Take
1. Consider: How does God strengthen our assurance of salvation? Where are we to look for assurance of God’s love for us?
2. Remember: Though we may be tempted to look inside ourselves for assurance of God’s salvation and try to find it in our own self-confidence or works, our only ground of assurance is God himself and the love he has shown to us in giving Christ Jesus for us. We are to look to him alone for assurance, for he is faithful to his promises and unchangeably loving to sinners.
3. Rest: God strengthens our assurance by giving us his Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance of eternal life in Christ Jesus. He has given us his word contained in the Bible to remind us of his gracious promises, and we can look at the finished work of Christ Jesus who loved us and gave himself for us. Nothing can take those who trust in Christ out of his hand. Look to him, trust him, obey him, and be assured he will preserve you forever.
