BCL Grow: Defending the Faith — 1 Peter 3:15
1 Peter 3:15 (Gospel)
But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect. — 1 Peter 3:15
“Hence, Peter counsels Christians to adopt a humble posture in the face of persecution as they testify and give a defense for the hope that is in us. We do not conquer through cultural domination and making claims about the world’s ignorance.” — J. V. Fesko, Reforming Apologetics: Retrieving the Classic Reformed Approach to Defending the Faith, p. 218.
Steps to Take
1. Reflect: When defending our faith, how do we exhibit a humble posture? What are other attributes we should have that help us show humility?
2. Remember: The fruit of the Spirit includes patience and kindness. God’s word also calls us to show gentleness to others as well as to love those who persecute us—to even love our enemies. Keep these things in mind when defending the faith, and trust that God may perhaps open the ears, eyes, and minds of others—and that they also may know the hope that we enjoy by faith in Christ Jesus.
3. Respond: Always be kind and gentle when answering others who may have questions about Christ Jesus, his church, and our faith. We are God’s messengers. As he is gentle and kind to us, so we also must love others as he has loved us.
