BCL Grow: Our Cross — Luke 9:23
Luke 9:23 (Perseverance)
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. — Luke 9:23
“There is a particular yoke of affliction which God has chosen for them, that hangs about them, and is seldom, if ever, taken off them (Luke 9:23). This is their special trial, the crook in their lot, the yoke which lies on them for their constant exercise. Their other trials may be exchanged, but that is a weight that still hangs about them, bowing them down.” — Thomas Boston, The Crook in the Lot, p. 86.
Steps to Take
1. Reflect: What is the cross you have been called by God to bear even as Christ Jesus bore his cross of affliction and humiliation? How is God using it to grant you the grace of humility and strengthen your faith?
2. Know: We face many trials—some are of short duration and some afflict us for longer periods of time. Others may last our entire lifetime—the cross God calls us to take up daily. However, you are not alone. We have each other to help bear the load—the fellowship of God’s people especially in a local church; and, by faith, we especially have Christ Jesus who calls the weary and heavy laden to come to him for rest.
3. Rejoice: With thanksgiving, rejoice that we have the Lord Jesus Christ to strengthen us and care for us even as we bear the load of daily affliction. The crosses we bear may not pass away in this life, but rejoice even now with the goodness we enjoy by God’s providence and also that the time is coming when all the tears and pain will be wiped away because of what Christ has done and is doing for you.
