BCL Grow: Assurance — 1 John 2:3
1 John 2:3 (Sanctification)
And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.. — 1 John 2:3
“The Holy Spirit works in our soul the marks of grace: He changes our nature, makes us a new creation, renews us from within, works real faith and real repentance in us, and puts us on the pathway of obedience so that we hunger and thirst after Christ’s righteousness, and we long to mind the things of the Spirt and obey all the Ten Commandments perfectly from the heart. He does all these things in us and then He shows us that He does those things in us.” — Joel Beeke, Knowing and Growing in Assurance of Faith, p. 97.
Steps to Take
1. Reflect: How do you know you are a child of God, united to Christ by faith? What work does the Holy Spirit do in order to help assure you that you are truly his?
2. Know: Assurance is surely grounded in belief and trust in the promises of God (2 Cor. 1:18-20). It is also grounded in the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. All those who are in Christ Jesus by faith have been given the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 2:12). The Holy Spirit shows true believers they are his in Christ Jesus by showing them the fruit of true faith (John 15:8)—sanctification, good works from the heart, and especially love for God and others (1 John 5:1-2).
3. Respond: As you reflect on your life, recall the grace God has given to you in bearing fruit. With prayer ask the Holy Spirit to remind you of your thankful obedience and the love you have show to God and to others. As he shows you the fruit of faith in your life, be assured that you are his.
