BCL Grow: Loving God— Psalm 31:23-24
Psalm 31:23-24 (God)
Love the LORD, all you his saints!
The LORD preserves the faithful,
but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.
Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the LORD!. — Psalm 31:23-24
“All the strength in men or angels cannot make the heart love God. Ordinances will not do it of themselves, nor judgments; it is only the almighty and invincible power of the Spirit of God [who] can infuse love into the soul. This being so hard a work, it calls upon us for the more earnest prayer and endeavour after this angelic grace of love.” — Thomas Watson, All Things for Good, p. 88.
Steps to Take
1. Reflect: What is the greatest of all the commandments and how do we achieve it?
2. Consider: When Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment, he replied by reciting Deuteronomy 6:5: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” However, the natural man, unregenerated by the Holy Spirit, is at enmity with God (Rom. 8:7). Yet, God gives a new heart to his people, making them alive and united to Christ, and loving them so that they may love him and one another (1 John 4:7-11).
3. Act: Strive to love God with everything you have—with all you are. In gratitude, return to God the love he has given to us in Christ Jesus. For love is the fulfilling of all the law of God—delight in it!
