BCL Grow: Your Motivation — 2 Corinthians 5:14-15
2 Corinthians 5:14-15 (Grace)
For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. — 2 Corinthians 5:14-15
“Now, the fact is we do have a duty and obligation to God. He is the Sovereign Ruler of this world, and in that capacity, He has ‘laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed’ (Psalm 119:4). But He motivates us to obedience, not on the basis of His sovereign rule, but on the basis of His mercy to us in Jesus Christ.” — Jerry Bridges, Transforming Grace: Living Confidently in God’s Unfailing Love, p. 93.
Steps to Take
1. Ask: What motivates you to obey God and serve others—duty, love, or both? Is it something you delight in or merely an obligation?
2. Consider: The grace of God doesn’t end at your conversion when he brings you to faith in Christ Jesus. In Christ Jesus there is no longer any comdemnation—nothing we do or say can separate us from God’s saving and life-giving love. In response we are called to live our entire life with gratitude by loving and serving God and others—a life controlled by the love of Christ and not mere duty.
3. Act: Be diligent to examine your motives for all you do. Motivated by love, delight to do God’s will with thankfulness for all his good gifts he provides to us, especially the gift of his only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, who died and gave himself for you.
