BCL Grow: Your God-Given Community — Acts 20:28
Acts 20:28 (Church)
Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.— Acts 20:28
“Christ rules now, but until he comes again to consummate his rule, the gospel of the kingdom is to be preached through the whole world. By this means people are to be brought into subjection to the King to be the subjects of his kingdom, and they are to be nurtured as its citizens and heirs by the means of grace and discipline (the “keys of the kingdom”) through the one kingdom institution in this age, the church.” — S.M. Baugh, The Majesty on High, Introduction to the Kingdom of God in the New Testament, p. 10-11.
Steps to Take
1. Ask: Some people think of the church as being merely a man-made institution. Do you view the church as an optional gathering of Christians or something more?
2. Consider: Scripture speaks often about the people of God. These people are instructed to gather together, worship, and care for one another. Thus, the church is God-formed with a particular focus and purpose. It is the Christ-instituted visible gathering of those who have Christ’s name upon them.
3. Reflect: Christians are citizens of the Kingdom of God; yet, they are still dwelling in a hostile world under the influence of sin and temptation. As citizens of a heavenly kingdom, God has given you a community to strengthen and encourage you in the power of his Holy Spirit through the preached Word and sacraments. Be part of the people of God and enjoy the benefit of God’s blessings in his church.
