BCL Grow: Conceived in Sin — Psalm 51:5
Psalm 51:5 (Sanctification)
“Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.” — Psalm 51:5
“For in the Bible, sin is something that goes deeper than our behavior. Indeed, we can do what is ‘right’ and be no better than whitewashed tombs, clean on the outside but rotten on the inside.” — Michael Reeves, Delighting in the Trinity, p. 68-69.
3 Steps to Take
1. Ponder: Even an unborn baby is guilty in Adam. How then should we think of sin? How are your motives behind your actions affected by original sin and the corrupt nature humans inherit from Adam?
2. Remember: The affection of the heart is a crucial aspect of true obedience. Do your good works come from a heart seeking to love God and others, or do they originate from sinful motives (i.e., pride, wanting fame or recognition, wanting to feel good about yourself etc.)?
3. Rejoice: In this life there will be many imperfections in our actions. As Christians we will do good things with sinful motives. Yet, we can rejoice that as we ask the Father for forgiveness, trust in his love and faithfulness, and seek to grow in love and affection for him, our motives will also be transformed, so that out of love for our heavenly Father we will do acts of love for others.
