Bible Passage

Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. — Philippians 4:11-12

Quote

“Worldly possessions tend to turn the hearts of the disciples away from Jesus. What are we really devoted to? That is the question. Are our hearts set on worldly goods? Do we try to combine devotion to them with loyalty to Christ? Or are we devoted exclusively to him?” — Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship, p. 174.

Steps to Take

1. Reflect: It can be easy to look at social media postings and think that almost everyone else has the perfect life. They don’t; it just looks that way online. It might seem like your dreams won’t come true, or maybe the dreams that did come true didn’t turn out the way you thought they would. The material things you hoped would bring you happiness have only made your life more complicated and stressful and filled you with anxiety.

2. Know: God doesn't tell us everything he is doing, and sometimes we ask him for things that wouldn’t be good for us in the long run. Your end goal is not to find happiness on this earth but rather to bring glory to God in all (Rom. 11:36). Whatever your dreams are, God has something far more glorious for his children than whatever we could imagine that will last for all eternity.

3. Act: You may have abundant material blessings right now, or you may be struggling financially. In either case, you don’t know what tomorrow will bring—but God does. Pray to your heavenly Father and trust in him, be responsible with all he has given you, and remember that your eternal state is secure in Christ:

And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. ( 1 John 2:17)

Seek to be content in whatever circumstances in which you find yourself and strive to bring glory to God in all things, for this is your joy and duty as his precious child.
