“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16
“The heart of the unique message of the Bible is that the transcendent, immortal God came to earth himself and became weak, vulnerable to suffering and death. He did this all for us—all to atone for our sin, to take the punishment we deserved.” — Timothy Keller, Encounters with Jesus: Unexpected Answers to Life’s Biggest Questions, p. 9.
Steps to Take
1. Consider: Many people claim that all religions are basically the same. Yet, the claims Christianity makes are vastly different than all other religions. What are some important defining differences about Christianity?
2. Remember: All other religions have a list of behaviors or moral imperatives that you must do to earn eternal life. Christianity, however, is based upon the truth the God is holy, but man, because of his sin, can never earn salvation by his works. God must save us, and we must trust in Jesus Christ who came to live and die for us and who has made those who receive him as their Savior forever part of the family of God.
3. Respond: Christ left his heavenly home to come to earth and rescue sinners by keeping God’s law perfectly and being the perfect once-for-all sacrifice for sin. Our salvation is not based on our works but instead on the finished work of Jesus on our behalf. We can be sure of heaven if we have placed our trust in Christ alone through faith alone by God’s grace alone. Meditate on the goodness of God in Jesus Christ today and always.
